Introduction

“It was so sudden, it shook me really… I don’t know why I just went down…”

We all fall from time to time throughout our lives. We fall in the playground during childhood, we can fall in and out of love during adulthood, we fall into debt and we fall out with friends and loved ones. Most of these we can recover from quite easily and go on to stand up straight and tall once more. However, when we fall as an older person, our confidence can be shaken and we can find it harder to “bounce back”.

Falling features three elderly characters from different backgrounds, and explores the various reasons for falling amongst the elderly. Presenting a series of common scenarios that can lead to falls, the play suggests ways of preventing falls, and actions that one can take to prevent a possible recurrence. It also highlights the various options available to the elderly to help with rehabilitation and falls prevention.

Falling is a warm and touching production, devised and proving effective for:

  • raising falls awareness amongst the elderly and their families
  • health professionals training at conferences and training days
  • health promotion in the community
  • an entertaining and thought provoking piece of theatre

Falling is accompanied by a facilitated post-show discussion which allows the audience to share stories and strategies and receive more information from the cast and attending health professionals.

History

Falling was originally commissioned by Walsall PCT to raise awareness of The Specialist Falls Service at Dartmouth House Rehabilitation Centre with a view to encouraging those who had fallen to utilise its services as a method of long term falls prevention.

Notes

“The humorous and touching nature of the work allows an often painful and embarrassing topic to be explored fully and engages with the audience using music and song to highlight the possible outcomes of falling and how it is always possible to regain a quality of life that one may think is beyond reach.”
Melisa Harrison, original cast member
