Introduction
“I do not want my doors to be walled and my windows stuffed. I want the cultures of all lands to blow freely about my house. But I do not want to be blown off my feet by any.” Mahatma Gandhi
“Best course I have ever been on.” Participant
This is a three hour interactive and accessible training programme exploring equality and diversity in the workplace and society. It can be adapted to suit the needs of any organisation and is particuparly suited to professionals in the public sector, health and social care.
W&T bring our acclaimed open and inclusive approach to a sometimes tricky issue, making this the ideal training package for all your employees including senior managers. Drama and roleplay are used to explore complex issues, allowing participants to grapple with the very real issues in a safe, fictional context where they can feel comfortable and supported to explore and debate.
‘Brilliant. Innovative. I wish other mandatory courses were as much fun!’ Participant, Walsall
This training offers:
• a dynamic approach using drama to stimulate discussion, which is thoroughly researched and tailored to each organisation
• the opportunity to explore equality and diversity on a personal and professional level.
• the opportunity to share experience and knowledge
• exploration of current equality legislation
We recognise that different people learn in different ways. We also recognise people need to work in a safe and confidential environment and that learning is more productive when it is fun! This training is experiential and here are some of the ways we work:
• sessions facilitated by 3 trainers/actors
• activities in pairs and small groups
• whole group discussions
• “hot-seat” actors in role interacting with the participants
• writing exercises
• using forum theatre
• personal reflection
• handouts with reference information & further exercises
History
The Equality and Diversity Training Programme was originally commissioned by Walsall tPCT to raise awareness of the key issues and themes surrounding equality and diversity. The programme was developed through in-depth research into the issues at hand with a range of experts, and tailored to the tPCT with further research amongst staff and others. In 2007/2008 the programme was delivered as a mandatory training programme to the entire staff of Walsall tPCT.
Notes
The Equality & Diversity training has been hugely successful and testament to the fact that a new approach is always worth investigating!
W&T are of course no stranger to a drama/theatre approach to all sorts of work in all manner of settings …. It’s what we do all the time. Nevertheless, this project presented new challenges for us. The training utilises so many different methods & ways of learning – with performance & artistic work laced in throughout. This actively engaged participants and there seemed to be something for everyone to gain from being involved in the session. Like a running buffet!
Terina Talbot, W&T Associate Director
