Introduction
“Three, that’s the magic number. Always has been, always will be…”
Bare Drama follows the story of three lads from the Estate, Sparks Diesel and Ash, a group of mates who’ve grown up together. Usually they do everything together, but recently Ash has been acting a bit strange, he’s got a brand new phone, more cash than usual, and he’s been carrying odd packages around… Performed by three versatile actors, Bare Drama is lively, funny and thought provoking, ringing true with real life experiences.
Aimed as a preventative tool, the piece encourages young people to look at the consequences of their actions and make informed choices. As with all W&T productions, the play itself is only half the story. The drama is followed by an in-depth workshop session with the audience, in which they have the chance to interact with actors in-role as characters from the play, discuss how they could resolve their situation or overcome obstacles, and form their own resolution to the drama.
The play is designed for Year 7 and 8 pupils in schools and community venues and is ideal for supporting wider gang awareness and prevention initiatives.
History
Bare Drama was commissioned by Leicester Y in 2008. The original brief was to create a piece of theatre exploring the issues surrounding gang membership and associated crimes, to act as a preventative and educational tool. Women & Theatre Associate Director Michael Aduwali researched the script extensively in Leicester, speaking to a range of young people in schools, communities and the criminal justice system, as well as parents and professionals.
Bare Drama first toured to schools and youth centres in Leicester in November 2008 to overwhelmingly positive responses. We are keen to explore opportunities for this piece to be performed in other areas where this issue is a concern, and if you are interested in the project please do contact us.
Notes
“This is an exciting co-production with the Y that promises to be an energetic and moving piece will make young people think and hopefully affect change.”
Michael Aduwali, Writer & Director
Outcome
“This is a really productive play which will be good for the community and also raise awareness to the young children that gangs are bad news, and so they won’t get involved. The children will watch and enjoy it, as it is really fun and enjoyable to watch. But they will also learn a really serious message: ‘knives are really bad, but gangs are worse. You can always drop the knife. You can’t just drop a gang”
From a review of the play by a young audience member
