Introduction
Barbara Nice is “as hilarious as it is possible to get” The Scotsman.
- The Independent
- Chortle
Following last year’s sell-out Comedy Night, Women & Theatre are back at The Glee Club to bring you another warm, friendly and hilarious night of laughter.
Local comedy legend Mrs Barbara Nice has been driving Women & Theatre’s iconic purple van the length and breadth of the UK, gathering a high quality line up of funny women including Jo Enright, Annette Fagon and Kerry Godliman. Barbara will put the “fun” into “fundraiser” in her uplifting style, she is even planning one of her world-famous raffles, where the prizes are always unexpected!
Mrs Barbara Nice is the comedy creation of Janice Connolly, star of Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights and Artistic Director of Women & Theatre. All proceeds from Barbara Nice & Gals go to Women & Theatre to raise money for a new company van. Women & Theatre’s well-loved iconic purple van is a regular sight on Birmingham’s roads, delivering theatre and workshops to the heart of the community, everywhere from theatres to schools, bingo halls and Gurudwaras. All this activity has taken its toll however, and as Barbara says: “look at the rust on it!”, and a new van is desperately needed to keep Women & Theatre on tour.
Throughout the years, Women & Theatre has held the belief that laughter is food for the soul, so all work features a healthy dollop of humour! So what better way to raise money for a new van than by having a good laugh in great company?
History
The Acts
Barbara Nice: Described as a hybrid between Mrs Merton and Victoria Wood, Barbara Nice doesn’t just blur the gap between audience and performer, she obliterates it. Barbara is the comedy creation of Women & Theatre’s Artistic Director and founder member Janice Connolly. Janice has also been seen in Peter Kay’s award winning Phoenix Nights (C4). Other TV credits include Max and Paddy, (C4), Thin Ice (BBC), Dead Man Weds (ITV) and Coronation Street (ITV).
Jo Enright is a local girl – the pride of Erdington. Voted best female on the Jongleurs comedy circuit, 2001 and winner of a Chortle Award for best female circuit comic in 2002. She has appeared on TV in Time Trumpet (BBC2), Lab Rats (BBC2), and has appeared with Peter Kay in That Peter Kay Thing, Phoenix Nights, and Britain’s Got the Pop Factor.
Annette Fagon is a loud and engaging comic newcomer, making fast progress on the UK comedy circuit with a nomination as Best Newcomer at the 2006 BECA Awards and Midlands Stand Up Runner up 2007. With her style of retro observational comedy, she has been compared to Peter Kay. Growing up as that rare thing in the midlands of the 1980s, the daughter of a Jamaican newsagent mother, has clearly left its mark.
Kerry Godliman is one of the fastest rising female comedians in the UK. She trained at the Rose Bruford College and has since combined careers as an actress and a stand-up, after making the final of the 2003 in Babycham Funny Women competition. As well as her solo work, she is half of the sketch duo Godliman and Lane, and was one of the stars of the 2005 Channel 4 sketch show Spoons.
