Birmingham's Award-Winning Theatre In Health & Education Company
As the name suggests, when Women & Theatre was set up in 1983 we offered development through drama focussing on issues of importance to women. Since then our remit has broadened and we now work with women, men and children. Welcome one and all!

About

Women & Theatre has been pioneering new ways of addressing contemporary issues through performance since 1983. Women & Theatre creates engaging drama, which promotes the spiritual, social, physical and mental well being of the whole community. We aim to reflect the language and lives of ordinary people, giving voices to those not usually heard. The company’s work reaches audiences in a huge variety of settings from conference halls to schools and community centres. These audiences experience focused, sensitive and complex dramas tackling issues, which are relevant to their personal and professional lives.

The Company has pioneered a unique process for devising scripts from in depth research. We share stories with individuals and communities in a process, which is both respectful and participatory. The resulting drama is therefore both funny and moving because it connects with people’s real life experiences. Founder member and Artistic Director of the company, Janice Connolly is also an accomplished comic writer and performer. As such, the trademark style of Women & Theatre drama features a healthy dollop of humour. By dramatizing subjects at the cutting edge of people’s consciousness we create challenging uplifting theatre that people want to see.

Women & Theatre were overall winners of GlaxoSmithKline's 2004 Impact Awards, that recognise excellence in community health.

Comedy Fun(d)raiser Gala Night !

To celebrate Women & Theatre's 25 yeards of making quality theatre about things that matter, Barbara Nice (everyone’s favourite Kings Heath housewife and mother of five) will be hosting a high quality pick and mix of the Nation’s funniest women, including:

Susan Calman: Since her first gig in Glasgow in 2005 to rave reviews in Edinburgh, Susan has proved herself to be a comedy force to be reckoned with. “A wee lassie with a big future” (The List).

Jo Caulfield: A regular act on the London Comedy Circuit, recent TV appearances include: Never Mind the Buzzcocks, The Stand Up Show and Bring Me the Head of Light Entertainment. “I never knew I could like a woman so much – I’m ashamed to say she did make me wet myself” (Graham Norton). Jo has just returned from a triumphant tour and is one of the most experienced and witty comics today.

Jo Enright is a local girl - the pride of Erdington. Voted best female on the Jongleurs comedy circuit, 2001 Jo is, “A marvellous mimic, a good character actress and a genuinely funny stand up comedian" (Daily Mail).

Annette Fagon: Annette Fagon is a loud and engaging comic newcomer, making fast progress on the UK comedy circuit. "With this sort of retro observational comedy, she’s just like Peter Kay would be – well, if he were female, black and from Leicester” (Chortle).

Shazia Mirza: Shazia’s distinctive deadpan delivery of observational comedy provides a unique perspective of life as a British Muslim stand up. Shazia has appeared on Have I Got News For You, performed at The Royal Albert Hall and London Palladium and presented BB1’s 10 Things You Always Wanted To Know About Islam (But Were Afraid To Ask). Shazia is originally from Birmingham.

Barbara Nice: “As hilarious as it is possible to get” (The Scotsman).

Described as “a hybrid between Mrs Merton and Victoria Wood” (The Times), Barbara Nice “doesn’t just blur the gap between audience and performer – she obliterates it” (Edinburgh Evening News).

Barbara Nice is the comedy creation of Women & Theatre’s Artistic Director and founder member Janice Connolly. Janice has also been seen in Peter Kay’s award winning Phoenix Nights. Other TV credits include Max and Paddy, Thin Ice BBC, Dead Man Weds ITV and Coronation Street.
